after 60 seconds silence, a haiku

(Crazy is rife. Former VP proclaims his sins and crimes and blames them on the current president.)

Let’s try sanity.

Today is the feast of Romuald. I don’t tire of yearly reading his Brief Rule.

St. Romualds Brief Rule

Sit in your cell as in paradise;
put the whole world behind you and forget it;
like a skilled angler on the lookout for a catch
keep a careful eye on your thoughts.

The path you follow is in the psalms -- don't leave it.
If you've come with a novice's enthusiasm and can't
accomplish what you want, take every chance you can find
to sing the psalms in your heart and to understand them
with your head; if your mind wanders as you read
don’t give up but hurry back and try again.

Above all realize that you are in God's presence;
hold your heart there in wonder as if before your sovereign.

Empty yourself completely;
sit waiting, content with God's gift,
like a little chick tasting and eating nothing
but what its mother brings.
......Saint Romuald's Brief Rule is taken from St. Bruno of Qerfurt's Lives of the Five Brothers (Chapter nineteen). It was written around AD 1006 -- about twenty years before St. Romuald's death -- and is based on reports from St. John, one of the "five brothers", who, like St. Bruno, knew St. Romuald well. We can therefore be certain we have here an authentic version of St. Romuald’s teaching and spirit.

Solitary sanity.

emergence sees itself

The battle is not for oil, nor whose particular religious or ethnic reality should rule. The battle, if that’s what it is called, is of the human soul with the soul of what the human will become.
Ah Poverties, Wincings, and Sulky Retreats
Ah poverties, wincings, and sulky retreats,
Ah you foes that in conflict have overcome me,
(For what is my life or any man's life but a conflict with foes,
the old, the incessant war?)
You degradations, you tussle with passions and appetites,
You smarts from dissatisfied friendships, (ah wounds the sharpest of all!)
You toil of painful and choked articulations, you meannesses,
You shallow tongue-talks at tables, (my tongue the shallowest of any;)
You broken resolutions, you racking angers, you smother'd ennuis!
Ah think not you finally triumph, my real self has yet to come forth,
It shall yet march forth o'ermastering, till all lies beneath me,
It shall yet stand up the soldier of ultimate victory.
(--WALT WHITMAN Leaves of Grass)
I see Iraq in every face on the sidewalks of midcoast towns. I see Nigeria in every car that passes. Ukraine sits in bakery. Iran and Syria hang out their bedclothes over porch railing.

Our real self has not yet come forth.

Watch for it.

Row and bicycle this morning

Do I believe in God?

(A ridiculous question.)

There is only God.

It is like asking: Do you acknowledge "what-is"?

These days God/tree is felled at Snow Bowl.

God/Iraqi is killed in Mosul.

God/Mexico-Brazil play to nil/nil.
